Interview with Sara M. Lyons:
Freelance Illustrator & Designer
This month we decided to interview one of our contributors for the 'Monster Mash' box Sara M Lyons! When looking for some spook-tacular gifts for the box we knew that Sara's ghosty pins would be a perfect addition.
How did you start your career as a freelance designer/illustrator?
I've always drawn for fun, and a few years ago I decided to start coming up with ways to turn my little illustrations into cute products. People really responded to my tiny handmade stickers and nail decals, so much so that I've working for myself full time since 2014.
What is your creative process, and how do you come up with fresh new ideas for your products?
My interests are all over the place so I feel like I have a neverending well of inspiration to draw from! I'm into comics, cult films, punk rock, midcentury design, paranormal/occult stuff, '80s and '90s cartoons, and outsider art - but I'm also inspired by lots of stuff that's more traditionally girly, like glitter and makeup and the color pink.
What has been your biggest achievement as a business?
There's not one specific milestone I'd point to so much as just the overall experience of growing my brand and being able to make a living doing what I love. I never thought this would be my path in life and I still can't believe it sometimes. I feel incredibly lucky!
What advice would you give to people/illustrators that are just starting out?
Develop your own style and stick to it - when people respond to your true aesthetic, it's way more satisfying than trying to bend to an existing trend. Also, even though this seems like a no-brainer, it's important to take pride in your work and put in care and effort every time. A lot of small designers and brands feel pressured to release tons of new product on a consistent basis in order to keep up with the jonses, but I think you can tell when someone is phoning it in. It's better to have a small line of quality stuff that's been thoughtfully designed rather than a giant line of stuff that's mostly just OK.
What is your favourite scary movie?
"Return of the Living Dead"
Do you have a favourite thing about halloween?
AND what type of monster would you be for the day?
A happy ghost, obviously!
